What does a collar pin do?

 

Collar pin are quite similar to safety pins. In fact, they virtually look the same, only they're made especially for the collar. Collar pin offers the instant advantage of not requiring holes in the shirt collar, which means you don't have to be picky about your dress shirt. 

The disadvantage here is self-evident: you risk ruining the fabric by poking holes through it. If the fabric is of high quality, this is a deal-breaker. A collar pin has two functions. 

First and foremost, it is intended to pull your collar tabs closer together, giving your collar a highly unique and distinct appearance. Second, it elevates your tie knot, allowing it to stand out more. Collar pin are not suitable for all shirt collars.

Most forward point collars, such as the one wearing above, will work perfectly. And, in perspective, club collars were designed just for collar pins. The main disadvantage of utilizing a Collar Pin is that it leaves holes in your collar. These will fade after washing, but if you continue to pin the same collar, it will deteriorate.

A collar clip is one of a few men's jewelry accessories that can be used to add visual interest while remaining faithful to classic men's style. However, whereas, pocket squares, neckties, and other accessories are commonly worn by many well-dressed men, a collar clip is not as ubiquitous. 

It has a pointed tip, as the name implies; it is shaped and constructed similarly to a giant safety pin, and it is worn by piercing through the shirt collar. Be aware that repeated use of a collar pin, especially with finer fabric weaves, may cause damage to your collars over time. But when used in moderation and with regular laundry, your collars should be ok. They come in both silver and gold finishes.
